Service Overview

EV Charger Installation in Liverpool, the full picture.

Everything below is what an honest, NAPIT-approved contractor will actually do for you, not what a marketing agency thinks sounds good on a website.

What it covers

EV charger installation covers everything from a single 7kW home wall unit on a driveway through to load-balanced commercial banks for staff and customer parking. Every install includes a proper load calculation on your incoming supply, DNO notification where required, dedicated circuit from your consumer unit (or sub-main), the correct Type A / Type B or DC-detecting RCD, earth-fault protection, physical mounting, commissioning, testing and certification.

Who it's for

Homeowners with off-street parking; landlords adding value to rental stock; workplaces and commercial premises offering EV parking; hotels, gyms and hospitality venues; fleet operators; developers speccing EV-ready driveways on new builds.

When you need it

Before you take delivery of the vehicle, not after. As part of a house move or renovation. When your current 3-pin 'granny cable' is running your ring main hot. When staff are asking about charging at work.

Why professional matters

EV chargers pull sustained high current for hours, very different from any normal domestic load. Installed off a general socket circuit or an inadequate board, they overheat wiring and trip protection nuisance-frequently. Installed properly on a dedicated circuit with the correct RCD, they're one of the cleanest bits of modern electrical kit in the house.

What Happens If You Leave It

The cost of putting it off.

Every one of these is something we see weekly. None of them get better on their own.

Charging off a 3-pin socket is a fire risk

'Granny cable' charging pulls near-maximum current for many hours through wiring never designed for it. Sockets and ring mains routinely overheat, this is documented industry-wide.

Wrong RCD type = tripping or worse

EV chargers require Type A with DC-fault detection, or Type B RCD. A standard Type AC RCD can be 'blinded' by DC fault current, a serious safety issue and non-compliant.

Unnotified installs cause DNO issues

DNO (Distribution Network Operator) notification is required for many installs. Skipping it can cause supply issues and complicate any future works on your incoming supply.

Un-load-balanced installs trip mains

In houses with electric showers, ovens and heat pumps, an EV charger without load balancing can push you over your main fuse rating, tripping the whole property.

Our Process

How the job actually runs, start to finish.

  1. Step 1

    Free on-site survey

We check your incoming supply, main fuse rating, existing consumer unit, cable route and mounting position. No survey, no accurate quote.

  2. Step 2

    Fixed written quote

Charger unit priced with the brand you want (we recommend from experience), cable route, mounting, and any board upgrades needed, line by line.

  3. Step 3

    DNO notification (if required)

For most 7kW single-phase installs we submit the notification for you. Nothing for you to chase.

  4. Step 4

    Install & commission

Charger mounted, dedicated circuit run from your board with the correct protection, commissioned to manufacturer requirements, app-paired if smart.

  5. Step 5

    Test, certify & hand over

Full initial verification and Electrical Installation Certificate. Walk-through of the charger, app, and any load-balancing settings before we leave.

Benefits

Why customers stick with us.

Leaf Eco manufacturer-accredited installer

Trained and certified directly by Leaf Eco, installs are logged against your unit for warranty purposes.

Load-balanced where needed

Dynamic load management on properties where the main fuse rating can't take a full 32A charger draw on top of existing loads.

Correct RCD type as standard

Type A with DC-fault detection or Type B, matched to the charger and to BS 7671.

Cable route agreed before install

We agree the exact cable run with you before starting, no ugly surface conduit surprising you on the day.

Domestic and commercial

Single home units through to multi-charger commercial banks with back-office reporting.

Fully certified and DNO-notified

Nothing left for you to organise. Everything filed correctly first time.

In Detail

Everything else worth knowing.

The specific materials, methods and situations that make this job go well, or badly, depending on who's doing it.

Home EV charger installation

For most homes, a 7.4kW single-phase smart charger mounted on the external wall closest to the parking spot is the right answer. We run a dedicated 6mm² or 10mm² cable (depending on route length and load) from your consumer unit, install a dedicated RCBO with the correct RCD characteristic, and commission the charger to your home network for app control, off-peak scheduling and any load-balancing needed. Where the incoming supply is limited, dynamic load management keeps you inside your main fuse rating without ever tripping.

Commercial EV charger installation

For commercial installs, staff parking, customer parking, hotel car parks, fleet depots, we handle the site survey, load calculation, DNO application (DNO notifications, capacity uplifts if needed), containment, cabling, charger installation, commissioning and back-office setup. We work with the leading commercial brands and match the hardware to how you actually want to bill, monitor and manage the chargers.

Brands, tethered vs untethered, Type 2

All new UK EV chargers are Type 2, either tethered (integrated cable) or untethered (you use your own cable). We'll walk you through the trade-offs, tethered is more convenient day-to-day, untethered is tidier when not in use and safer against cable theft. We install a range of leading UK-supported brands and can order to your preference, we don't sell you a specific brand for its margin.

Residential vs commercial, where it differs

Home installs are usually a single 7kW charger, single-phase, dedicated circuit off your board, often completed in half a day. Commercial installs involve load balancing across multiple units, three-phase supplies, back-office charging network setup, RFID access control, and (often) invoicing / cost-recovery integration. Both are done to the same fundamental standard, the complexity sits in the site design and back-end config.

Common Questions

EV Charger Installation, answered.

Straight answers to the questions we get on the phone every week. If yours isn't here, call 07351 982452 and ask.

How much does EV charger installation cost in Liverpool?

+

Priced after a free on-site survey. Cost depends on the charger you choose, cable route length, and whether your consumer unit needs an upgrade. Fixed written quote before any work starts.

Do I need to upgrade my consumer unit?

+

Sometimes. If you're on a rewireable-fuse or older non-compliant board, yes. We check on the survey and package both jobs together if needed.

How long does the install take?

+

Most straightforward home installs are half a day to a day, including testing and certification.

Do you notify the DNO for me?

+

Yes, for standard single-phase 7kW installs, we submit the notification. You don't need to do anything.

Can you install any brand of charger?

+

We're accredited with Leaf Eco and install a range of leading UK-supported brands. We'll recommend based on your actual needs, not on what we happen to have in the van.

What about commercial or workplace charging?

+

Yes, full commercial installs from single workplace chargers to multi-bay banks with back-office reporting and RFID access.

Is the install guaranteed?

+

Workmanship is backed by our NAPIT registration; the charger unit carries its manufacturer guarantee, logged against your install by us.

Do I need off-street parking to have an EV charger installed?

+

For home charging, yes, cables running across public footpaths aren't compliant. We'll be upfront if your property isn't suitable rather than sell you an install you shouldn't have.
